The National Center for Lesbian Rights seeks a highly skilled, enthusiastic, and motivated Director of Finance and Operations based at its national office located in San Francisco, California.

About the National Center for Lesbian Rights

NCLR is a national legal organization committed to advancing the civil and human rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people and their families through litigation, public policy advocacy, and public education. Since its founding nearly 36 years ago, the National Center for Lesbian Rights has asserted bold and strategic national leadership at critical moments in the struggle to win marriage and family rights, expand immigration and asylum efforts, support youth safety, create and promote a positive sports culture, as well as work on elder law and transgender law.

Principal Responsibilities

The Director, reporting to the Executive Director, is a member of the management team and a full-time, exempt position. The Director oversees financial reporting functions including budget, financial statements, general ledger, receivables and payables, payroll, banking, and investments and interacting regularly with members of the Board of Directors. The position also manages NCLR's administrative activities including human resources and benefits, selected purchasing, and office operations. The Director will supervise the Office Manager and work closely with numerous vendors and consultants.

Ongoing Responsibilities

Fiscal Management

  • Supervise the preparation, execution, and monitoring of annual operating budget of over $4 million.
  • Create and manage processes to develop cash flow projections.
  • Prepare monthly financial statements for NCLR's Board Treasurer and Finance Committee.
  • Supervise preparation of all management reports and analyses.
  • Work with development department to reconcile gifts on a monthly basis.
  • Complete annually applications to public workplace giving campaigns.
  • Direct all accounting functions, authorize and audit expenditures and accounting entries, and ensure proper internal financial controls.
  • Monitor NCLR's investment portfolio and cash flow, and manage relationships with service providers, consultants, managers, and bankers.
  • Develop business and contractual agreements between NLCR and outside vendors and consultants.
  • Establish and monitor systems for managing contracts and grants, including invoicing and grant reporting.
  • Work with project staff to exercise strong fiscal management.
  • Support and develop relationships with outside fiscal experts (accounting firm, auditor).
  • Oversee preparation of IRS, state, and local taxes and reports.
  • Facilitate preparation of annual independent audit.

Human Resources

  • Oversee NCLR's administrative policies/procedures and human resource activities and practices.
  • Refine human resource systems, including recruitment, hiring, termination, and performance review processes.
  • Research labor laws and ensure NCLR's compliance.
  • Update employee and supervisor handbooks.
  • Ensure that all human resource-related matters are handled appropriately and in compliance with applicable local, state, and federal regulations and laws.
  • Manage employee personnel files; and administer health and 403(b) benefits.

Operations Management

  • Oversee all information technology and office purchases, policies, contracts, and equipment.
  • Manage and negotiate the office lease.
  • Supervise the office manager and IT consultants.

Other

  • Manage and/or execute special research and other projects related to the NCLR's mission.
  • Serve as a member of NCLR's management team.

Professional Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in business, accounting, finance, or related discipline. MBA/Accounting or CPA is preferred.
  • Minimum experience: five to seven years of increasing responsibility in a nonprofit organization.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, QuickBooks, FundEZ and Excel.
  • Excellent writing skills.
  • Flexibility and the ability to work in a small and friendly office environment where each employee assumes multiple responsibilities.
  • Understanding of fund accounting and non-profit organizations' financial planning concerns.
  • Experience with budget planning and development.
  • Ability to present information effectively and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, and peers.
  • Ability to work effectively with the entire management team and ensure that directors understand their financial and budgetary responsibilities.
  • Human Resources experience in the areas of compensation, benefits, staffing, organizational development, and employee relations.
  • Practical knowledge of California employment law.
