Freelance/Consultant Assignment
Freelancers Union is sponsoring new, member-driven, nonprofit health plans in Oregon, New Jersey, and New York. We are seeking a freelance Business Communications Associate to join our team. The Business Communications Associate oversees all technical and operational communications for Independent Worker Services; develops and implements communications strategies for new initiatives and products; drafts and edits digital and print communications; liaises with vendors and partners on communications processes and reviews; oversees and manages technical copywriter(s); and advises internal departments and vendors on operational communications best practices.
What you'd have to do:
- Manage digital and print communications for IWS, including mapping out the calendar of communications in conjunction with other members of the department; drafting and/or editing emails, letters, one-pagers, web copy, and other communications materials; managing mailing lists; sending emails; coordinating with the mailing house; and tracking results
- Maintain an expert knowledge of CO-OP benefits, products, and operations
- Develop and implement business communications plans for IWS, including insurance enrollment periods, insurance vendor implementations, case management, medical management, etc.
- Serve as Communications contact for new and existing insurance vendors (including billing and enrollment, claims processing, medical management, pharmacy claims processing, and specialty pharmacy vendors) to ensure that the appropriate brand, tone, and style are appropriately represented across all member-facing enrollment and post-enrollment communications
- Develop training materials and talking points for customer service teams
- Oversee technical writer(s). Assign work, review copy, and coordinate compliance reviews
- Review and approve all business requirement documentation (BRD) for new processes and procedures with communications components, providing feedback and edits. The Associate will also draft BRDs for vendors as needed for new processes and procedures.
- Serve as internal project manager for business communications projects, including vendor implementations, member-facing web portals (in conjunction with creative and technical teams), and open enrollment periods
- Develop customer satisfaction surveys and other market research tools to help improve services for members and aid in the development of communications and marketing plans
- Consult with Marketing and Creative Team on branding, pre-enrollment advertising, and ongoing marketing initiatives. Assist in development of pre-enrollment materials.
Experience and skills you need to have:
- Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to adapt writing to different audiences and organizational cultures
- Three to five years of experience in a writing/communications role
- Experience with healthcare, retirement, or insurance communications, PR, and advertising (both online and offline)
- Experience creating and managing effective business processes and communications
- A collaborative work style and an entrepreneurial spirit
- Excellent organizational and prioritization skills and the ability to manage several projects without sacrificing quality or attention to detail
- Familiarity and basic proficiency with technology, particularly web content management systems
- Ability to collaborate as a productive member of a team or work individually on solo projects
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent
