Brooklyn Defender Services (BDS) is the largest Brooklyn-based legal services provider to low income Brooklyn residents. BDS represents over 40,000 clients per year in criminal, family, immigration, education and housing matters. The family defense practice represents indigent parents accused of neglecting their children in King County Family Court. Our cases involve families struggling with homelessness, domestic violence, substance abuse, and mental illness. Interdisciplinary teams of attorneys and social workers advocate strongly for parents' due process rights in family court and help low income families get the benefits and services they need to stay together in the face of poverty and discrimination. Brooklyn Defender Services seeks highly motivated and energetic paralegals who work well in a team, are able to multi- task and are comfortable in a very fast-paced environment.
Paralegals will work closely with attorneys who have handle a high volume, litigation-oriented practice and will be closely supervised by attorneys on their work. Duties will include summarizing transcripts, case records and hospital and mental health records; interviewing clients and drafting client affidavits; conducting legal research; representing clients and preparing them to testify at administrative hearings to clear clients' records with the State Central Registry; drafting motions, petitions and other legal documents, such as discovery requests; proof -reading appellate briefs and written summations; giving advice to clients who walk in or call on the phone, and following up with service providers.
A college degree is required. Candidates should have excellent oral and written communication skills, organizational skills, the ability to multi-task and to work as part of a team. Prior office experience, preferably in a law office, is preferred. Bilingual ability in English and Spanish preferred.
