Chicago Program Director; Peer Health Exchange

Description: Peer Health Exchange ("PHE"), is a national non-profit organization that gives teenagers the knowledge and skills they need to make healthy decisions. We do this by training college students to teach a comprehensive health curriculum in public high schools that lack health education. Since our founding in 2003, we have trained more than 5,000 college student volunteers to deliver effective health education to over 57,000 public high school students in Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, the San Francisco Bay Area and Washington D.C. In 2011, we launched a four year Strategic Plan with three major priorities: deepening impact, investing in more robust program evaluation, and developing and testing additional methods for impact, all while serving 120,000 teens over the next four years.

The primary responsibility of the PHE Chicago Program Director is to lead the PHE Program in Chicago. The PHE Chicago Program Director will do this by developing, managing, growing, and evaluating the PHE Chicago Program, managing the PHE Chicago Program team, and assisting with the development and execution of strategic plans. The Chicago Program Director reports directly to the Chicago Executive Director and works closely with the National Director of Program Implementation.

This is a full-time, management position with a competitive salary and benefits package.

Responsibilities

The PHE Chicago Program Director will oversee the direct management of the Chicago program, with duties including but not limited to:

•Oversee PHE Chicago college and high school sites by:

o Developing, managing, growing, and evaluating the PHE program at Chicago partner colleges and public high schools

o Directly managing one college site and its corresponding high school partners

o Supervising all volunteer recruitment, selection, training, and teaching across college sites

o Sharing lessons learned related to the Program Director role with national staff and other sites for future adoption across other sites (by acting as the liaison between the Chicago program team and our National and other city-based program teams)

o Cultivate, build and manage relationships with distric, charter management organizations, high school administrators, and college administrators, with the support of the Executive Director and program staff members

o Analyzing and reporting data for program evaluation purposes

Manage the Chicago Program team and support them in/by:

o Developing Chicago college sites:

o Supervising volunteer recruitment and selection

o Leading the training of college student volunteers

o Managing college student leaders on an ongoing basis

• Evaluating volunteer performance

• Coaching through the feedback cycle with volunteers

• Scheduling workshops

o Developing partnerships with Chicago public high schools:

o Leading initial outreach efforts to establish or renew partnerships with schools

o Supervising the scheduling and implementation of PHE workshops

o Gathering feedback on the success/challenges of the program

o Coaching. observing (via site visits and one-on-one meetings) and providing feedback to Program Managers on:

o program operations (high school and college management)

o engaging and training student volunteers

o building relationships with high school staff

o Creating and managing professional development opportunities and trainings for local program staff, in collaboration with our National office

o Building a cohesive team among Los Angeles program staff and volunteer student leaders to achieve program objectives

• Cultivate, build and maintain relationships and partnerships with community organizations, government agencies and elected officials to increase the visibility and local strength of PHE

• Support the execution of city-wide events

• Lead the tailoring of our nationally-designed model to meet local challenges and conditions, with the support of the Executive Director and National program team members

•Manage the Chicago Strategic Plan by:

o Directly managing the implementation of Chicago strategic investments and pilots

o Planning and executing the launch of new college sites

o Working closely with the Executive Director to develop annual strategic growth plans

• Managing the annual program budget, including tracking quarterly actual expenses, and making recommendations to the Executive Director for adjustments as needed

• Build a cohesive team among Chicago Program staff and student leaders to achieve program objectives

• As needed, coordinate and manage the recruitment and hiring of program staff in tandem with the

Executive Director and national program team

• Support the Chicago Executive Director in external affairs/fundraising work as needed

Qualifications

Peer Health Exchange is looking for a dynamic, creative, driven individual who:

• Is committed to the Peer Health Exchange mission and core values of deliberate decision-making, direct communication, complete effort, significant standards, commitment to results, and rigorous evaluation

• Has significant experience supervising, managing, and training others; particular experience in recruiting and managing volunteers a plus

• Has 4-5 years of work experience in program development and implementation; previous experience in strategic planning a plus

• Has experience designing and implementing programs serving youth in Chicago or a comparable urban area

• Is knowledgeable and passionate about health disparities experienced by low-income youth in Chicago

• Strong relationships with organizations and agencies working on adolescent health and public education in Chicago a plus

• Has strong public speaking, verbal and written communication skills in order to communicate effectively with diverse constituencies including college students, high school partners, board members, supporters, and community members

• Has experience managing a program budget

• Spanish fluency a plus

• Has a Bachelors degree; other advanced degree a plus

• Is comfortable in a fast-paced, high-energy, entrepreneurial environment

• Is comfortable managing multiple projects and duties at once

• Is willing to work evenings and weekends as required by the duties of this position

• Is willing to travel to effectively oversee the entire Chicago region's program and travel 2-3 times a year for training purposes
