6 hours per week/2 hours per day

Inspirica is one of the largest organizations serving the homeless in Connecticut. We provide emergency shelter, transitional housing, permanent housing and affordable housing to 600 adults and children in lower Fairfield County each year. We further provide critical support services such as children services, education, counseling, employment support and access to a vast of array of other services such as health care, substance abuse treatment, mental health care etc. In addition to being homeless, the people we serve typically suffer from mental illness, substance abuse and/or HIV/AIDS. Many also have severe cognitive impairments, a history of incarceration, little or no work history, and little education. All of our participants live at or below the poverty level.

Our mission is to break the cycle of homelessness by helping people achieve – and maintain – permanent housing and stability in their lives. Our principles are to be a results oriented, cost-effective organization with a caring professional staff and dedicated volunteers who believe in individual human potential, personal accountability and mutual respect.

Position

As one of the few housing programs in the state of Connecticut that can serve an entire family we are faced with a unique problem – how to care for the children within these families.

Homeless children suffer from low self-esteem, poor academic achievement, and poor health. They are sick four times more often than other children, have three times the rate of emotional and behavioral problems, are four times more likely to show delayed development, and are twice as likely to have learning disabilities. Less than 25% of children who are homeless graduate from high school.

Our groundbreaking Children's Services Program plays an instrumental role in helping to save these children. It provides them with the support they need to develop in line with their peers who are not homeless, maintain stability, gain self-esteem, excel in school and much more. It is designed to promote positive youth development, strengthen the parent/child relationship, and support the entire family.

Within the Children's Services Program, Inspirica offers a unique opportunity for our homeless children age 0 – 5. Inspirica's Early Childhood and Parenting Program (ECPP) combines crucial early childhood learning/development and a pre-literacy program for homeless children ages 0-5 with essential parenting skills classes for their parents. Children participate in verbal and written activities, exploration, music, art, science, stories and songs, all designed to promote school readiness and development. Parents participate in classes that cover areas such as socialization, communication, boundaries, behavior/discipline, nutrition, reading, writing, child development, and advocating for children.

The ECPP is offered in collaboration with two expert organizations in their respective fields: Childcare Learning Centers (CLC) which provides the curriculum and teacher for our pre-k learners and Saint Joseph Parenting Center (SJPC) which provides the parenting curriculum and teacher.

The most effective way to break the cycle of homelessness is through children. Our Early Childhood and Parenting Program is perhaps Inspirica's most important and impactful program. This is an excellent opportunity for the right candidate to make a difference in lives of hundreds of children.

The Program Assistant will report directly to the Program Director. The hours are from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist with the day to day operations of the Early Childhood and Parenting Center.
  • Work directly with our children ages 0 - 5
  • Diaper and feed children as needed
  • Acclimate new volunteers to the program
  • Make sure the learning environment is clean and organized
