The Public Prep Network is a nonprofit organization that develops single-sex elementary and middle public schools that pursue excellence through continuous learning and data-driven instruction. Our model is designed to empower each student to build strong character, demonstrate critical thinking, possess a core body of knowledge and be on a predictive path to earn a degree from a four-year university.

Public Prep is currently comprised of three tuition-free, all-girls charter schools centered on the core values of Scholarship, Merit, Community, and Responsibility.

Girls Prep Lower East Side Elementary, the first all-girls charter school in New York City and the inaugural school in our network, was launched in 2005 and serves 325 students in grades K-4. Girls Prep Lower East Side Middle School and Girls Prep Bronx Elementary School launched in 2009 and are both entering their fourth years of operation. Girls Prep Lower East Side Middle School serves 225 students in grades 5-8th. Girls Prep Bronx serves 375 students in grades K-4th.

Joining our team at Girls Prep Lower East Side Elementary School

Public Prep is seeking a Mathematics Instructional Coach to serve Girls Prep Lower East Side Elementary School for the 2013-2014 school year.

The Mathematics Instructional Coach will be responsible for developing and supporting a culture of reflective practice in order to build the capacity of all instructional staff members (Fellow, Associate, and Lead Teachers, and Learning, Reading, and English Language Learners Specialists, etc.) in implementing rigorous, Common Core State Standards aligned mathematics instruction.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Drawing on content expertise to provide clinical coaching and observation cycles for all teachers, guiding teachers through the reflection process and providing critical feedback to support the continuous learning and achievement of professional development SMART goals
  • Ensuring instructional staff lesson plans and instruction are aligned with the current scope and sequence and all school-wide instructional initiatives
  • Demonstrating model lessons in classrooms to illustrate pedagogical strategies and approaches
  • Identifying teachers with particular instructional strengths and connecting peers to facilitate mentoring and shared knowledge within and across grade levels
  • Encouraging innovation and risk taking in teachers adoption of instructional best practices for mathematics
  • Actively participating on the Instructional Leadership Team
    • Working with the Director of Curriculum and Assessment to provide mathematics content expertise for curriculum mapping
    • Working with the Principal and Director of Curriculum and Assessment to remain up-to-date on school-wide instructional initiatives
    • Actively participating in grade level planning meetings and child study team meetings
    • Leading professional development sessions related to mathematics content
    • Supporting teachers and the Instructional Leadership Team in efforts to educate families about mathematics curriculum and instructional strategies they can use at home with their daughters
    • Providing workshop and conference recommendations for staff as to how to spend their annual $1,500 professional development stipend in order to support individual professional growth

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
  • An M.A., Ed.M. or Master's degree in elementary education and/or mathematics
  • An in-depth understanding of the Common Core State Standards
  • A minimum of five years of demonstrated success in teaching elementary math, preferably in a high-performing, urban school setting
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively coach, train, and develop educators is a plus
  • Evidence of excellence in teaching through continuous learning and data analysis
  • Superior communication skills
  • The ability to work collaboratively
  • A commitment to single-sex education
