IMMIGRATION LEGAL SERVICES COORDINATOR

ORGANIZATIONAL PROFILE: The Office of the Criminal Justice Coordinator (CJC) facilitates cooperation and partnerships among the agencies and actors involved in crime-fighting and criminal justice in New York City. In doing so, CJC works to ensure the fair and efficient functioning of the criminal justice system in New York City. CJC serves as a liaison between the NYPD, the Departments of Corrections and Probation, the 5 District Attorney's Offices, and other agencies to help coordinate consistent citywide policy on criminal justice issues. CJC also advises the Mayor on criminal justice matters and is responsible for developing and implementing policies, legislation, and strategies in the fields of public safety and criminal justice. CJC has focused particularly in the past few years on special projects for the Mayor, including efforts to combat illegal gun trafficking, make better use of DNA evidence in investigations, and target quality of life offenders.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: The incumbent will report to the First Deputy Criminal Justice Coordinator and will oversee and monitor the assignments and performance of City funded Immigration Attorneys for the City's Indigent Defense Program.

The City is funding several Immigration Attorneys who will be responsible for advising clients on the collateral consequences of criminal or family court proceedings on immigration status. The attorneys are also responsible for the provision of legal advice and representation to indigent clients in immigration matters including deportation/removal proceedings, seeking citizenship or making other immigration applications to the Federal government. The incumbent will NOT be representing clients or providing legal advice. Duties of the Coordinator include, but are not limited to:

  • Tracking assignments of immigration legal matters to immigration attorneys employed at the City's institutional indigent defense providers
  • Compiling data and preparing regular statistical reports on program performance and liaising with immigrant attorneys at the City's institutional indigent defense providers, the New York State Office of Indigent Legal Services and CJC staff regarding logistics, oversight and billing/budget issues
  • Making arrangements for obtaining the services of foreign language interpreters for meetings and translations, and obtaining transcripts for court and/or agency proceedings as needed and requested by the immigration attorneys at the City's institutional indigent defense providers
  • Overseeing billing and bookkeeping for the attorneys at the City's institutional indigent defense providers

PREFERRED SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two (2) years of satisfactory full-time professional experience working in one ora combination of the following areas: working with the budget of a large public or private concern in budget administration, immigration advocacy, legal services, accounting, economic or financial administration, or fiscal or economic research; working in management or methods analysis, operations research, organizational research or program evaluation; working in personnel or public administration, recruitment, position classification, personnel relations, labor relations, employee benefits, staff development, employment program, planning/administration, labor market research, economic planning, or fiscal management; or in a related area
  • Excellent organizational, time-management and multi-tasking skills, including the ability to take initiative, prioritize duties, work independently and within a team environment, pay close attention to detail, meet deadlines and work well under pressure
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal skills
  • Proficiency in math and accounting, including qualitative and quantitative analysis methods
  • Excellent computer skills, including a strong facility with Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point
  • Ability to think creatively, embrace new approaches and pioneer innovative solutions to intricate problems
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish, preferred

SALARY: Commensurate With Experience; Duration: One (1) year pending additional State funding
