Organization Overview:

The New Jersey Department of Education is building seven regional offices (RACs) that will lead the state's efforts to accelerate student learning and close the achievement gap. The regional office teams will provide high-impact support to the state's lowest-performing schools to ensure that all students will graduate college-and career-ready. New Jersey's Regional Achievement Centers (RACs), struggling schools, and their districts will partner to set clear goals for student growth, put proven turnaround principles into action, and use data to drive decision-making and accountability. Working together, we will meet our shared goal of closing the achievement gap and preparing all of our students for success in college and career. Of particular importance to the Department is providing high-impact support to the state's lowest-performing schools, to ensure that all students will graduate college and career ready.

Position Overview:

This is an extraordinary opportunity for a strong educator to share the expertise and knowledge they have gained in an effort to improve education in our state's lowest performing schools. The State Intervention Specialist will play a critical role in improving student performance through ensuring the effective implementation of programs and strategies for students two or more years behind in mathematics and/or literacy. This position will work closely with the state literacy and mathematics specialists to identify high impact programs and/or strategies for addressing students' needs and accelerating learning. He/she will be an experienced educator, with expertise in effective instructional strategies and interventions for reading or mathematics. The State Intervention Specialist will assist content coaches, lead teachers and administrators to use data for implementing and evaluating the effectiveness of interventions.

Responsibilities:

• Work collaboratively with schools, districts and NJDOE leadership and staff to develop comprehensive interventions in language arts and mathematics.

• Identify research-based, effective and innovative approaches and strategies for students performing below grade level.

• Successfully implement intervention programs and activities designed to meet the needs of students two or more grade levels behind.

• Provide professional development to staff and administrators on intervention initiatives.

• Analyze student performance data to monitor the progress and effectiveness of intervention strategies.

Qualifications:

Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university. Master's degree in education, public administration/policy, or related field preferred.

Experience: Minimum five years of experience in education practice, policy, or management focused on outcomes; clear track record of driving improvements in student learning in public school systems; extensive knowledge of RTI models and school turnaround principles; strong oral, written and presentation skills; ability to analyze data; an understanding of educational policy and practice; experience in consensus building; ability to motivate and lead a diverse learning community.
