Summer Intern – Communications, Community Relations and Public Affairs

Background:

The Boston Foundation, Greater Boston's community foundation, is one of the oldest and largest community foundations in the nation, with net assets of more than $900 million. In 2012, the Foundation and its donors made $88 million in grants to nonprofit organizations and received gifts of close to $60 million. The Foundation is a partner in philanthropy, with some 900 separate charitable funds established by donors either for the general benefit of the community or for special purposes. The Boston Foundation serves as a major civic leader, provider of information, convener and sponsor of special initiatives that address the region's most pressing challenges.

Position Summary:

The Boston Foundation is seeking an intern for the summer of 2013 to perform administrative tasks related to the department of Communications, Community Relations and Public Affairs. The summer intern will be primarily responsible for updating a comprehensive database for strategic mailings, but may also be exposed to large-scale public forums and may have opportunities to attend events in Greater Boston. The intern must have a flexible schedule and be able to work at least 4 days a week approximately 20 hours per week with the possibility of more if there are department events. The internship will include a small stipend.

Essential Functions:

The intern will work with the Communications Coordinator on a variety of tasks: updating a database of business and civic leaders; coding individuals in database for strategic mailings; uploading contacts from external lists into database; organizing and cataloging all reports; cataloging photos from Understanding Boston forums and other special events; creating press kits to promote the Foundation's public policy work; cataloging minutes from Board of Directors meetings; researching area organizations in preparation for the 100th anniversary; organizing and cataloging media and press; assisting with event preparation; completing other tasks as assigned.

  • Excellent organizational and research and skills
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate as a member of a team
  • Self-motivation and ability to work independently
  • Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds (report boxes)
  • Sense of humor
  • Some college education preferred
