Sacred Earth Trust

About Us

Sacred Earth Trust is a registered non-Governmental organization (NGO) working for environmental sustainability in one India's most historic centers - Bodh Gaya. Located in the central Indian state of Bihar, Bodh Gaya is the place where the Buddha attained enlightenment some 2,500 years ago. Over the centuries, the town has endured as a major pilgrimage destination for Buddhists from all over the world. Today, Bodh Gaya is a remarkably multi-religious, multi-ethnic community where Muslims, Hindus, and Buddhists live, work, and pray side by side. In 2002, the town became a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Despite such cultural wealth, Bodh Gaya lacks the proper environmental infrastructure needed to support its growing population and many visitors. Furthermore, climate change and rapid development pose challenges to Bodh Gaya's many farmers. Through community organizing, free training programs, and consciousness raising Sacred Earth Trust works with to make Bodh Gaya a clean, green, and sustainable city.
