SC&I's educational, scholarly and public mission affirms the premise that communication and information processes must put people first. Our faculty excel in educating graduates to lead their professions. Their lasting contributions shape the communication, journalism, media, library and information science fields. The sum of this expertise is second to none, and forms the heart of our teaching success. Our communication and information scholarship aims to understand such pressing issues as: the new media and democracy, social networks, virtual environments and collaborative design, health and wellness, leadership and policy.

SC&I is among the nation's original iSchools.

Rutgers belongs to the prestigious Association of American Universities.

SC&I was created in 1982 with the merger of the Graduate School of Library and Information Studies, the School of Communication Studies, and the Department of Urban Journalism. The journalism and library science programs each had roots in programs established in the 1920s at Rutgers, and the communication program was established during the 1970s.

SC&I offers four undergraduate programs:

  • Communication major, leading to a Bachelor of Arts degree,
  • Information Technology and Informatics major, leading to a Bachelor of Arts degree,
  • Journalism and Media Studies, leading to a Bachelor of Arts degree,
  • Digital Communication, Information, and Media minor

two master's programs:

  • Communication and Information Studies
  • Library and Information Science (both on campus and online)

a interdisciplinary doctoral program:

  • Ph.D. in Communication, Information and Library Studies

and non-degree graduate study in school librarianship, preservation management, youth literature, and other areas.

SC&I has about:

  • 1,800 undergraduate majors in three degree programs, and 28 declared minors in our new DCIM program
  • 550 masters students in two degree programs
  • 50 graduate students pursuing nondegree certificates
  • 120 doctoral students
  • 18,300 course enrollments per year
  • 60 full-time faculty
  • 100 part-time faculty
  • 60 teaching assistants and graduate assistants
  • 29 full-time staff and about a dozen FTE part-time staff

SC&I has offices, classrooms, and laboratories in New Brunswick at 4 Huntington Street, in the adjacent DeWitt House at 185 College Avenue, at the SC&I Annex at 192 College Avenue, at Huntington House at 184 College Avenue, and Richardson House at 1 Richardson Street. Microcomputer, multimedia, broadcast, information organization, and communication interaction laboratories and facilities are available for the use of SC&I students.

Among the distinguished faculty of the school are Fulbright Fellows and Annenberg Scholars; recipients of awards from the Academy of Management, American Society for Information Science, Association of Computing Machinery, American Library Association, the Journal of the American Society for Information Science, and the National Communication Association; Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Center for the Critical Analysis of Contemporary Culture, Center for Historical Analysis, Institute for Research on Women; and recipients of Rutgers University awards for teaching, research, and service, among other honors.

Our outstanding students include recipients of dissertation awards from the American Society for Information Science & Technology (ASIS&T), the Association for Library and Information Science Education (ALISE), and the National Communication Association (NCA), as well as Beta Phi Mu Dissertation Fellowships; winners of the student chapter of the year awards from ASIS&T and the Public Relations Society of America (PRSSA); recipients of the Ralph Bunche Fellowship Award, National Research Council Associateships, and Johnson & Johnson MCIS Fellowships; and hundreds of inductees into disciplinary honor societies.
