The Estria Foundation raises the social consciousness on critical human and environmental issues through public art projects, education, and community events across the globe. We empower grassroots communities to utilize public art as a medium to project their voices on both local and international levels.
Arts education makes a tremendous impact on the developmental growth of every child and has been proven to promote educational equality across ethnic and socio-economic boundaries. It has a measurable impact on steering youth away from high risk behavior and truancy problems while increasing academic performance. At the Estria Foundation, we believe that the process of collaborative public art making can impact the individual as we work together to impact the world around us.
The production of a collaborative public art project builds community and creates a lasting relationship between people and the space. As we transform spaces with art, we transform the community around them, and the people within them. Brainstorming images and stories to share, cleaning the area, painting the wall, and sharing meals and music, empower the participants and instill pride in the neighborhood.
Arts with roots in the Hip Hop movement cross social, international, and economic boundaries. Graffiti attracts people to the arts and enables people from different cultures to recognize their similarities and common struggles. We focus on mediums that young people find relevant and use them as a common language to connect communities and create bonds of solidarity.
We are investing in the development of visual communication skills within communities engaged in struggles around the planet. While lacking the resources to fund corporate billboards or media campaigns, grassroots communities are rich in knowledge, history, and hope for the future. The process of creating public art work with the people who are most impacted and engaged in creating change, adds a visual microphone to the toolkit of those working for social justice. In the battle to be heard, this tool in the hands of impacted communities can bring a vital and sometimes silenced voice to the table.
