Training Within Industry is an old WWII supervisory skills program that taps into the power of the individual worker. The TWI program, among others. was used in post war Japan in an effort to rebuild the economy and empower workers to work together in making their jobs and economic station better.
The program has been refound in the U.S., thanks to the discovery of the program in modern day Japanese management practices, most notably that of Toyota. Made more popular through the direct link to Toyota's empowerment program, Kaizen, TWI is surging forward as the missing link to employee empowerment and teamwork all over the world.
Even more relevant today for developing countries and economies, TWI skills will teach managers how to be leaders - by teaching them how to instruct, how to improve job methods and how to lead people, maintain good relations and become world class problem solvers.
In promoting the TWI Service website, I chose Idealist.org for a reason, simply stated in the mission:
"We would like to live in a world where:
All people can lead free and dignified lives.
Every person who wants to help another has the ability to do so.
No opportunities for action or collaboration are missed or wasted.
The TWI program dovetails beautifully with Idealists.org's statement above. Visit the TWI website, download the materials in the public domain and understand why TWI has been called the "most underrated achievement of teh 20th century."
