About us

The New York Council for the Humanities provides leadership and support across the state’s intellectual and cultural sectors through grants, programs, networking and advocacy in order to encourage critical thinking and cultural understanding in the public arena.  Organized in 1975, the Council is a private, tax-exempt, not-for-profit organization that is supported by contributions from individuals and corporations as well as by grants from private foundations and government agencies (including the National Endowment for the Humanities).

The Council views the humanities as critical to individual fulfillment and to an understanding of modern social experience. For more information about the Council and its activities in New York State, visit or follow us on Facebook and Twitter @nyhumanities
