Since 1994, the UT Austin Charles A. Dana Center and its AmeriCorps for Community Engagement and Education (ACEE) program have collaborated with Austin Independent School District Elementary Schools to provide a research-based literacy
intervention program in their schools. ACEE is a high quality, comprehensive, bilingual literacy-tutoring program that supports students, families, and the community. Working in the school and
classroom, 30 full time AmeriCorps Members provide intensive one-to-one and small group literacy tutoring to children in kindergarten through first grade. Working at the Lucy Read Pre-K Demonstration School 42 part-time AmeriCorps members provide small group literacy instruction to pre-kindergarten children. They are supervised weekly on-site by ACEE literacy experts and all members attend a weekly training meeting. Full-time members participate in various after-school community partnerships.
Over the past ten years, ACEE Members have: 1. Conducted more than 40 family learning events to engage parents and their children in fun literacy activities that demonstrate the state curricular guidelines and content.
2. Established partnerships with
community agencies, uniting efforts to serve east Austin children.
3. Colaborate with Austin community partners such as Austin's Children Museum, SafePlace, and KIPP Acadamy.
4. Conducted and participated in monthly community service projects,
including co-chairing the Día de los niños/Dia de los libros celebration each year, a bilingual family literacy event that served over 2500 east
Austin residents each year.
ACEE Full-time members provide individual tutoring to kindergarten and first grade children who are making low progress in literacy acquisition these children are called focus children. Each member is assigned focus children who they tutor for the entire year. When members are not working 1:1 with focus children, they are assigned to provide classroom instructional support to teachers. ACEE members are also required to participate in after school tutoring, mentoring and service learning projects, and to help support
Family Literacy Nights at project schools. This program requires commitment to learning how to
teach reading effectively and to working long hours in public school settings. No prior teaching experience is required. The ACEE ongoing training and on-site supervision is designed to provide you
