The name, "Modified" came from the founder's wish to teach the sport by our core principles of Safety, Sportsmanship, and Fun. These principles were not the focus of many clubs in the late 70's. Fortunately, the sport has evolved and so have we. The MAF teaches by the rules of the United States Fencing Association in all three weapons.
Our classes are mostly hosted by the Continuing Education programs of Ridgewood, Paramus, and Midland Park, NJ. These classes operate around the town school schedules. At the United Methodist Church of Hillsdale, we operate a year round schedule on Tuesday evenings and Saturday mornings. This includes group classes, private lessons, open fencing, clinics and tournaments. Please see the Course Info page for more information.
Students from age 8 to 80+ with any level of physical ability are welcome. Private lessons start at $25. Open fencing is $10, group classes are $12, tournaments are $20 (or $18 for club members). We also offer instructional clinics and fun youth events throughout the year. The MAF provides all equipment for beginner classes except for gloves - $15. Membership in both the MAF and USFA is encouraged, but NOT required. The MAF is undoubtedly the best fencing value in the area!
We host an annual dinner to further encourage sportsmanship and a sense of community among our fencers. At the dinner we honor the accomplishments of our fencers both as athletes and citizens. Awards are given for displaying proper sportsmanship at MAF tournaments, representing the MAF at other fencing club events, and achievement in competition.
