About Us

PEFC – the Programme for Endorsement of Forest Certification - is the world's largest certification system.

PEFC is an umbrella organization for national forest certification systems, which may gain global recognition by PEFC if independent assessments confirm their compliance with PEFC’s Sustainability Benchmarks. Today, PEFC has recognized about 30 national forsest certification systems, whose standards extend to over 232 million hectares of forest and chain of custody certificates in over 7500 businesses around the world. The PEFC logo is visible on certified wood products around the world.

PEFC was founded in 1999, on the principles of a bottom-up, ‘think global, act local’ approach. Through encouraging the national development of locally relevant forest management standards and multi-stakeholder processes, PEFC ensures sustainable forest practices reflect local expectations while also meeting internationally agreed sustainability benchmarks.
