About Us

Our mission is to develop and strengthen the children and families in our reservation communities so they can fulfill their greatest individual and collective potential, spiritually, mentally and physically.

The Sioux YMCA was established in 1879 by Lakota Sioux men. Today the Sioux YMCA is located on the Cheyenne River Sioux Indian Reservation in South Dakota. Focusing on engaging academic, athletic, and artistic programming, the Sioux YMCA serves the children of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Reservation on site, in the Tribal schools, in the communities, and through Leslie Marrowbone Memorial YMCA Camp. With a limited budget and staff, the Sioux YMCA strives to achieve its goals of providing programming for children and families on the reservation that will foster healthy and happy lifestyles in ever increasing creative ways.

We accept volunteers and interns from all over the world, for four week to a year placements, to live on the reservation and to work with our YMCA programs. Volunteers work with Lakota children, families, and local schools to improve the quality of life for the people living in our area. This is a tremendous experience for personal growth and cultural understanding. This is also an excellent opportunity for college students looking for an exciting and unique opportunity. The position is extremely challenging but is also very rewarding. The YMCA provides housing, which may be shared and co-ed, as well as cultural and program training.
