About us

Notre Dame Mission Volunteers-AmeriCorps (NDMVA) is a partnership between Notre Dame Mission Volunteers (NDMV) and AmeriCorps. The Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur founded NDMV in 1992 and partnered with the federally funded AmeriCorps in 1995. With this partnership they have been able to increase the number of volunteers and broaden the scope of their services in financially-limited sites. NDMVA serves multiple sites in more than 20 cities in the United States. Volunteers work with the economically disadvantaged through education and hands-on support.

San Francisco is one of the cities; 19 volunteers work at several schools in the San Francisco Bay Area. Four placements for the academic year of 2013-2014 remain open at this time; all of them are in Redwood City, about 30 miles south of San Francisco. Two of them are in elementary schools (K-5), one in a middle school, and one in a high school. The elementary and middle schools are community schools which offer students and their families services and opportunities beyond the academic instruction.

Requirements: Volunteers must be 21 years or older and must be a US citizen or a lawful permanent resident of the US. They must also have a college degree and/or related work experience. The ability to speak Spanish is preferred, but not required. Applicants should also possess: a willingness and commitment to serve full-time for the academic year; good communication and interpersonal skills; the ability to be flexible, adaptive, and work on a team.

Benefits: Volunteers receive a taxable living allowance of $12,100 and health insurance. Upon successful completion of the eleven-month service term, volunteers also receive a $5,500 taxable education award which may be applied to qualified student loans or to future education at a Title IV institution. Training, professional development and organizational support are offered throughout the term. Housing is available on a first come-first served basis.
