About us

L'Arche (French for "the Ark") are communities of people with and without intellectual disabilities, as members of an international Federation.

In June 2011, L'Arche St. Louis opened its first home as the 17th L'Arche community in the USA.

We are an expansive network of people, including community members sharing life in the home in Maplewood, dedicated board and committee members, and the many friends and supporters who make this community a reality.

As a L'Arche community, we aim "to offer not a solution, but a sign, a sign that a society, to be truly human, must be founded on welcome and respect for the weak and downtrodden" (Charter of the Communities of L'Arche). Mutual relationships and trust in God are at the heart of our journey together. We celebrate the unique value of every person and recognize our need of one another.

As we continue to grow our community, we seek to follow the mission of L'Arche which is to:

  • Make known the gifts of people with intellectual disabilities, revealed through mutually transforming relationship.
  • Foster an environment in communities that responds to the changing needs of members. being faithful to the core values of our founding story.
  • Engage in our diverse cultures, working together toward a more human society.
