National Center for Family Literacy

Nonprofit or community organization

Last modified: December 5, 2010, 11:33 PM

Description

The National Center for Family Literacy's mission is to create a literate nation by leveraging the power of the family.

Family literacy is an intergenerational approach based on the indisputable evidence that low literacy is an unfortunate and debilitating family tradition. Parents who are not literate tend to have children who struggle academically and who often do not achieve literacy proficiency in adulthood.

Family literacy helps parents and children form a learning partnership that ends the cycle of poverty and low literacy. NCFL works to find solutions to the literacy crisis that build on the family to create a new cycle of ongoing learning and mutual support.

Through groundbreaking initiatives, NCFL fuels life improvement for the nation's most disadvantaged children and parents. More than 1 million families throughout the country have made positive educational and economic gains as a result of NCFL's work, which includes training more than 150,000 teachers and thousands of volunteers. Led by founder and president Sharon Darling, NCFL champions a cause that promises a brighter future for all families.
