About us

Audubon Maryland-DC, established in 2000, is preceded by the twenty-year history of five area Audubon chapters. The organization encompasses five chapter-owned sanctuaries, the twenty-one-year old Pickering Creek Audubon Center, the six-year-old Jean Ellen duPont Shehan Audubon Sanctuary and our newest program in Baltimore City, the Patterson Park Initiative.

Our network of centers throughout the state creates a collegial professional network from which each center can draw for program support. Our 30-member staff includes talented individuals with a cumulative 150 years experience in science education. They have significant experience with Maryland and District of Columbia school assessment tools which help center staff tailor school programs to address the specific curriculum needs of local school systems. Special opportunities exist for Patterson Park area residents to attend overnight programs at our 950-acre Jean Ellen duPont Shehan Audubon Sanctuary in Bozman, Maryland and at our 400-acre farm at the Pickering Creek Audubon Center in Easton, Maryland. Audubon Maryland-DC believes that a fuller understanding of the environmental issues affecting our region also requires a rural to urban interchange. For this reason, programs are developed and implemented at our Eastern Shore centers that include group field trips to Patterson Park. Participants in these programs learn about urban environmental issues and assist with education and habitat projects in the Park.
