Our mission is to work in partnership with the community to promote and protect the health and social well-being of all Houstonians.
We provide traditional public health services and seek to use innovative methods to meet the community's present and future needs. An example of our grass roots effort to document the community's needs is the Assessment, Intervention and Mobilization (AIM) project. Through AIM, we go door-to-door in selected neighborhoods performing assessments, linking residents to services and providing immediate follow-up. We have partnered with nonprofit Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) and the hospital district primary care clinics to enhance access to services for residents and improve the city's health profile. Other efforts include our innovative HIV testing program for the community called "Hip-Hop for HIV Awareness", "See to Succeed", "Project Saving Smiles" and "One Sight". Together these services build a better, healthier cadre of youth and ensure a better future for at-risk children, schools and the community at large.
History: Houston Department of Health and Human Services (HDHHS)has partnered with University of Houston, San Jacinto College, Kids Vision For Life (The Essilor Foundation)and the Berkley Eye Center to improve vision and vision-related health, education and social factors by performing annual vision exams and providing eyewear to those who were identified as having the need.
