About us

Telefono Azzurro was founded in Italy on June 8, 1987 as a non-profit organization committed to the prevention of child abuse and neglect. During these 27 years, has become a reference point for children and adolescents in difficulty and at risk. The association is strongly involved in advocating children's rights and promoting a children's culture within the society by collaborating closely with local, national and international institutions.

The core of Telefono Azzurro Onlus' activity is the counselling service which includes different services all operative 24/7 to answer to thousands of calls every day from all over Italy: the toll free number 1.96.96 dedicated to children and adults who wish to report abuse and mistreatment or discuss problems or difficulties that they might be experiencing who want to report abuse or other problems/difficulties that children and adolescents might be experiencing. Telefono Azzurro also manages the toll free number 114, the Italian national child's welfare emergency line, since 2003, and the European hotline for missing children 116.000, since 2009.

Furthermore, Telefono Azzurro promotes awareness campaigns and provides on-site training for teachers, parents and educators; organizes educational activities. It serves as permanent observatory on the situations of children and adolescents in Italy by developing research activities and releasing many publications on specific thematic, as for example the "National Report on Children and Adolescents", annually issued in collaboration with the research center "Eurispes".
