Community Tax Aid (CTA) provides taxpayer education, free federal and state income tax preparation and represents our clients whose returns are questioned by the IRS or state tax agencies free of charge.
CTA needs volunteers to help low-income workers complete their federal and state income tax forms, provide administrative and operational support at tax sites, and provide translation assistance at locations Washington, Maryland and Virginia. Training will be provided for all volunteer positions. Volunteers will have the opportunity to assist taxpayers at clinics open weekdays, weeknights and weekends. For more information, please contact our volunteer coordinator at email@example.com.
CTA provides thousands of low-income taxpayers with professional tax assistance each year. Program volunteers:
•help low-income workers to receive the federal Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), a refundable federal tax credit worth over $4,000, as well as state EITCs.
•help working families receive the Child Tax Credit and Child and Dependent Care Credit.
•help seniors receive the tax exemptions they are due.
•help struggling students and families to claim education credits.
This year at many of the sites, we need volunteers for the following positions:
</b>Tax Preparers </b>: Interview customers and prepare their federal and state income tax returns. Experienced managers will be available at each tax assistance location to answer volunteers' questions and concerns, review each tax return and provide support. All volunteers wishing to provide free tax preparation are required to attend training and pass a certification test. Some of the training is available as an on-line option. Trainings will be offered in January and early February. Certified Public Accountants can earn CPE credit by attending training and volunteering for at least 10 hours. Some CTA sites have paper preparation, and some have electronic preparation. Volunteers wishing to volunteer at these sites and do computer preparation will be required to attend an additional computer training class.
</b>Translators </b>: Provide translation assistance to clients who speak English as a second language. CTA needs volunteer translators at our tax preparation sites and assistance translating our materials. The greatest need is for translators fluent in Spanish, Cantonese and Mandarin, and there is strong demand for American Sign Language, Arabic, Farsi, French, Korean, Russian, Serbo-Croatian, Turkish, and Vietnamese, but CTA sees clients who speak over 40 different languages.
</b>Greeting, site administration and operations </b> : help make sure our clients feel welcome and that we are able to provide the highest quality assistance possible to our hardworking clients. CTA needs volunteers to greet and orient clients, to photocopy and assemble tax returns, and to provide administrative and operational support at our tax sites.
</b> E-File Manager </b>: Coordinate activities relating to e-filing at a particular tax site. Includes verifying that volunteers have gathered all needed documentation from clients, keeping track of paperwork, follow-up on tax returns with e-filing errors.
