The Arts and Humanities Department creates programs which promote and encourage public awareness of and interest in the artistic and cultural development of the City. It does so by carrying out the mission of "cultivating Saline county through the power of the arts and humanities to change lives and build community."
The Director of Arts & Humanities oversees the department's eleven (11) full-time employees. Created in 1966, The Salina Arts and Humanities Commission involves twelve citizens serving as the policy-making body of this department of City government.
SAHC provides leadership to create a range of quality cultural experiences through its programming areas: Horizons Grants Program, the Smoky Hill River Festival, life-long arts and humanities education, public art and community design, and community programs and services.
SAHC represents and develops the arts at the City level, and serves in an advisory capacity to the City Commission and City Manager in matters of public cultural policy. SAHC also has oversight of the Smoky Hill Museum, a regional historical museum, which is a division of the department, with administration under the direction of the SAHC executive director.
