About Us

The Westport River Watershed Alliance's (WRWA) mission is to restore, protect, celebrate and sustain the watershed of the Westport river. The purpose of WRWA is to promote and preserve the environmental integrity of the Westport River and its watershed and the coastal environs of Buzzard's Bay. WRWA advocates for the wise use and preservation of the natural resources for the benefit of area citizens. We do this through research,  environmental advocacy, remediation/protection projects and education.

The Westport River, a tidal river consisting of east and west branches covering more than 3,000 acres with 1,000 acres of associated salt marshes, is fed by a watershed of nearly 100 square miles. The associated 7 miles of coastline include extensive beaches, barrier beaches, and rocky shorelines.  The region is notable for its diversity of fish and wildlife, it recreational and economic importance, and its natural beauty.

Origins: In 1976, Westport citizens assembled and successfully resisted a proposal to construct a sewage lagoon on the upper East Branch of the Westport River.  That initiative grew into what is now the Westport River Watershed Alliance (WRWA).
