San Francisco Teacher Residency

Nonprofit or community organization

Last modified: September 12, 2012, 4:48 PM

Description

The San Francisco Teacher Residency (SFTR) program is recruiting aspiring teachers in critical subject areas. We are looking for future math, science, Spanish bilingual, and elementary education teachers who are committed to teaching in an urban setting.

Combining a yearlong classroom apprenticeship with targeted master's level coursework, the program provides Residents with the practical learning, hands-on experience, and ongoing support essential for successful careers in teaching. When SFTR graduates become the teachers of record, they will have gained valuable teaching experience, an understanding of the challenges ahead, and an ever expanding network of fellow educators to lean on for support and advice.

At the end of the residency, graduates earn a California Preliminary Teaching Credential and coursework leading to a master's degree in education. Upon successful completion of the residency, candidates commit to teaching in one of San Francisco's hard to staff schools or subjects for a minimum of three years.

SFTR is a partnership program between the San Francisco Unified School District, the University of San Francisco, Stanford University, United Educators of San Francisco, AmeriCorps, and the San Francisco Education Fund.

Our partnerships provide immense benefits to our Residents, such as reduced tuition at USF and loan forgiveness eligibility at Stanford; an $12,100 AmeriCorps stipend plus health care benefits for the program year; a $5,250 AmeriCorps Education Award, which can be applied to the cost of the master's degree; intensive teacher training under the supervision of a master teacher in a hard to staff school or subject; priority placement with the San Francisco Unified School District at the end of the residency year.
