About us

Founded in 1997, Wishtoyo is a 501(c)(3) non profit organization dedicated to protecting Chumash Native American culture and the environment all people depend upon. Wishtoyo also has a Ventura Coastkeeper program that protects inland and coastal waterways in Ventura County.

Wishtoyo improves the well being of communities and protects natural resources in Los Angeles, Ventura, Santa Barbara, and San Louis Obispo Counties through our unique approach of integrating and sharing Chumash culture in our environmental education programs, advocacy and legal actions to protect the environment, and our spiritual wellness programs.

The foundation for the success and effectiveness of our work, is Wishtoyo's core: its Chumash Discovery Village overlooking the Pacific Ocean in Malibu. Wishtoyo has worked hard to restore, and bring back to life, this centuries old historic Chumash Village by building Aps (Chumash houses) and a ceremonial gathering area within this ancient village site that once was heralded as a center of Chumash culture. Wishtoyo's headquarters are located at the Village, which is the home of Wishtoyo's events, programs and ceremonies.
