About us

Our Mission: To inspire and enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to realize their full potential as productive, caring and responsible citizens.

Our Vision: The Boys & Girls Clubs of South Oakland County is the premier youth-serving organization that delivers personal growth and enrichment opportunities for Club members in an accepting, fun, safe and positive environment. The Club provides, at its core, meaningful staff relationships that encourage members to reach their full potential. An investment in the Boys & Girls Clubs of South Oakland County is the best investment in our future.

Our History: The Club was founded in 1958 with direction and support from Sylvester J. Christie and the Royal Oak Optimist Club. With humble beginnings in a small log cabin, the Club is now at home in the Jack andPattiSalterCommunity Center, named after the Club's founding Executive Director, Jack Salter and his wife Patti. Our Club has received more National Honor Awards from Boys & Girls Club of America than any other Club in the country. Three of our Youth of the Year have traveled to meet with Presidents of theUnited States and eight of our Youth of the Year have been selected as the Youth of the Year for the state of Michigan.

Our Members: The Club provides programs and services to youth ages 6 – 18 years of age.

Our Service Area: The Club provides services to youth in southern Oakland and Macomb counties through two locations based in Royal Oak and Ferndale. Youth who live in any community without a Boys & Girls Club may attend our Club (examples: Centerline, Sterling Heights, Oak Park, etc.).

Our Programs and Services: The Boys & Girls Club offers programs in six core areas including Character and Leadership Development, the Arts, Health and Life Skills, Sports, Fitness and Physical Recreation and Career Development and Education. Additionally, the Club provides specialized programs including parent support groups, family and individual crisis counseling, emergency financial assistance, college scholarships and community service.
