About us

Jewish Family Congregation (JFC) is
a warm and vibrant community that
fosters a sense of Jewishness,
coupled with pride and delight. Our
worship style is informal, with a lot of
congregational participation. And
congregants love to sing. JFC was
established in 1981 by families in
South Salem NY and neighboring
towns who wanted to create a
congregation where Judaism would
be more than practiced, it would be
celebrated. As a Reform
congregation belonging to the Union
of American Hebrew Congregations
(UAHC), we welcome the equal
participation of men and women in
our religious life. One of the greatest
values of Judaism has always been
education. At JFC, Jewish education
is a lifelong process for learners of
all ages and abilities encompassed
by the Early Childhood Program,
Religious School, and Adult
Education. The Early Childhood
Program, with its nursery school and
parenting center, helps create a
special bond between parent and
child and help preschoolers to grow
socially, emotionally, cognitively and
physically. Jewish Family
Congregation's Religious School is
unrivaled in its personalized attention
to each student and his/her
individual needs. Its innovative
curriculum and programs are
intended to give students a feeling of
love, pride and respect for their
heritage, and the desire to embrace
Judaism. At JFC education does not
end upon Bar or Bat Mitzvah. In
grades 8 and 9, the Confirmation
Class explores contemporary issues
and current events from a Jewish
perspective with the rabbi. Adult
Education at the synagogue offers
adults learning experiences that
inspire, empower and challenge
adult learners. The performing of
mitzvot through social action helps
members appreciate what they have
by giving some of it to those in need.
JFC's social action activities include:
Food and clothing drives in support
of the Katonah Community Center;
an annual blood drive; the monthly
Midnight Run to distribute sack
lunches and clothing to the
homeless living on the streets of
Manhattan; Share-a-Shabbat monthly
visits to a nearby group home for
developmentally disabled adults;
and Adopt-A-Highway, where twice a
year congregants can be seen
wearing bright orange safety vests
and carrying orange garbage bags,
clearing debris from a two-mile
stretch of Route 35. There are
numerous ways to make a difference
at JFC. The Board of Directors
welcomes new members onto its
committees, which include Ritual,
Education, Membership, Facilities,
Fundraising, Rabbi-Congregational
Partnership, Publicity, and Social
Action. The JFC Youth Group is a
program for teenagers in grades 9
through 12 to meet twice monthly to
socialize, to participate in social
action, and to go on outings to
places of interest such as the Jewish
Museum. The Women's and Men's
Groups invite members and
non-members alike to participate in
a variety of exciting programs and
activities. The Judaica Shop offers a
fine selection of ritual objects, jewelry
and housewares to enrich the
Jewish experience.
