About us

Through research, education and practical applications the Animals and Society Institute brings our vital connection with other animals into the public consciousness. This work energizes profoundly positive changes for the benefit of people and animals.

Founded in 1983, the ASI is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.  It provides leadership in Human Animal Studies (HAS), a rapidly growing interdisciplinary field.  We work directly with colleges and universities to establish and support curricula and advanced degrees in this area. We also publish scholarly journals and books that further this work with a wider audience.  And we sponsor education and practical solutions for counselors who treat convicted animal abusers.

We are the only one-stop resource that can deeply support people working on a full spectrum of human-animal relationships.  The ASI gives them the knowledge and tools they need to get results.  We recognize that these projects help create safer and more compassionate communities for all.
