Growing Food and Sustainability

About Us

Growing Food and Sustainability is a new hands-on environmental education program for the community of Middleton, WI. For the first season, we will primarily be engaging middle and high school youth in a program focusing on gardening and food production but also incorporating nutrition, cooking, art, people-powered transportation, and multi-age relationship building through teaching and mentorships.

The program’s home base will be the garden and greenhouse, located at Middleton High School and Kromrey Middle School, where we will hold the majority of the workshops and host open garden work hours. However, we will also expand our work into the greater Middleton community. Some of our ideas include running a kids activity table and possibly selling some of our produce at the Downtown Middleton Farmers’ Market, taking group bike trips to the nearby Bock Community Garden, and delivering (by bike trailer) a percentage of the produce we grow to the Middleton Outreach Ministry’s food pantry.

We are Wisconsin's first Summer of Solutions program, a training ground for its participants and a launching pad for the solutionary vision. With the support of local partnerships and a national network of fellow solutionaries, participants create self-sustaining projects that have a direct impact on their communities and that serve as models for others to build on.
