Founded in 1987 as AIDS Legal Council of Chicago, we use the power of the law to secure dignity,
opportunity, and well-being for people facing illness or disability.
We've successfully expanded our "legal care" for people with HIV
to also stand up for individuals living with other chronic, disabling,
and stigmatized health conditions. This includes mental illness,
homelessness, and children and youth with special needs.
To reflect these changes, we changed our name to Legal Council for Health Justice.
AIDS Legal Council will remain a strong foundational program of the
agency, along with newly merged programs, Chicago Medical-Legal
Partnership for Children and Homeless Outreach Project.
We assist low-income people manage the complexities, barriers, and
unique stigma they face to remaining healthy. In order to achieve our
mission, our work focuses on three core areas: free legal assistance,
education, and public policy.
