About Us

The Maine Health Access Foundation (MeHAF) is the state’s largest private, 501(c)(3) nonprofit health care foundation.  Our mission is to promote access to quality health care, especially for those who are uninsured and underserved, and improve the health of everyone in Maine.

Annually, MeHAF provides about $4 million in grant and program support to achieve its mission by working with nonprofit partners and key leaders in the public and private sectors to advance initiatives and policies that particularly help those who face barriers accessing health care services and achieving optimal health.

The foundation is governed by a 15-member statewide Board of Trustees.  MeHAF also has a 20-member statewide Community Advisory Committee that provides guidance and input to the Board on the foundation’s work.

MeHAF is non-partisan, does not have members, and has a self-sustaining funding source through its invested endowment.

The foundation was legally incorporated in April, 2000 following the sale of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Maine to Anthem.  This sale provided $82 million that served as the foundation's initial endowment.  MeHAF is an independent private nonprofit health foundation, and has no affiliation with Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield of Maine.
