About us

National Urban Fellows, Inc., a nonprofit 501 (c) (3) organization, was founded in 1969 with a grant from The Ford Foundation. Initially charged with the mission to identify, recruit and train women and minorities for leadership and policy making positions in America's cities, the organization expanded its mission in 1980 to address the leadership needs of rural America.

After 39 years, National Urban Fellows, Inc. is recognized as one of the nation's best leadership development training institutions for women and minorities to acquire hands-on experience from prominent mentorships, and education from interdisciplinary curriculum, which ensure Fellows become effective, innovative senior managers.

The fellowship program is 14 month graduate program leading to a Master of Public Administration degree. It is comprised of two semesters of academic course work, a nine-month mentorship, and a one-week academic conference, leading to a Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree from Bernard M. Baruch College, School of Public Affairs, City University of New York. During the mentorship, Fellows complete course work via distance learning. African-American, Asian, Latino, and Native-American women and men are strongly encouraged to apply.
