The purpose of the Delaware County Literacy Council is to enable adults and their families of Delaware County to acquire the literacy communication skills in order to participate fully in society and to advocate for literacy at all levels.
The Delaware County Literacy Council was formed in 1975 by a coalition of volunteers concerned by the number of people they saw who were frustrated by their inability to read and write. It remains unique among the adult basic education offerings in Delaware County in that it is the oldest and only program whose primary mission is to provide free basic literacy instruction to adults residing in the county.
The Delaware County Literacy Council is a private, non-profit educational agency that provides basic instruction to adults needing basic skill enhancements and literacy through a countywide network of professionally trained and supported volunteer tutors and paid instructors. The Council also offers instructional programs to individuals for whom English is a second language. In response to the changing culture, math and technology literacy programs enhance the basic skill instruction. In its commitment to break the generational cycle of illiteracy, the Council has added a family literacy component that provides education for parents and their children, and parenting skills.
