About Us

PRETOMA is a Costa Rican non-profit NGO founded in 1997. We are a marine conservation and research organization working to protect ocean resources and promote sustainable fisheries policies in Costa Rica and Central America.

PRETOMA seeks to protect the populations of sea turtles that nest and feed in the coastal and marine environments of Costa Rica, and the habitats on which they depend. We strive to work in a manner that respects and satisfies the economic and cultural needs of the coastal communities and other groups that directly interact with sea turtles, such as fishermen.

We also seek to protect endangered shark species from over-fishing and incidental capture, and educate the public about the rapid decline of shark populations worldwide.

To reach our goals, we work in close conjunction with coastal communities, the fishing industry, NGOs, academic institutions, government institutions and international environmental organizations and volunteers.
