About us

CRED (Centre for Rural Education and Development) is an NGO focused on improving the lives of villagers in the Madurai district of Tamil Nadu, South India, through a continuum of programs. The organization, established in 1987, is run primarily by women and is dedicated to empowering women through the formation of women's Self-Help Groups (SHGs). These groups consist of between 15 and 20 women from the same village who are invested in changing their lives through education, entrepreneurship, and practice of their human rights. Micro-credit enterprises enable these women to start their own businesses, gain economic security, and improve their status within the community. SHG women undergo extensive training that educates them in a variety of fields, from reproductive health to establishing credit.

CRED also engages in awareness-raising programs that seek to eradicate child labor and child trafficking in the region. Working with other local NGOs and governmental agencies, CRED has established Non-Formal Education centers (NFE) to help reorient into school those children who have prematurely left their studies.

Recognizing the interconnections among the environment, health, and an individual's overall welfare has led the organization to construct programs that foster self-awareness and promote environmental stewardship. Recent projects include rainwater-harvesting programs and adolescent health trainings that promote safe sex and proper hygiene.

The CRED Family Counseling Centre assists families and individuals in crisis. A well-trained and motivated staff helps people in need of economic, vocational, relational, or psychological assistance through a variety of counseling methods. Several programs also operate to provide care for the elderly community by helping with loan procurement, running eye and health camps, and organizing recreational opportunities.
