About Us

The mission of the International Museum of Surgical Science is to enrich people's lives by enhancing their appreciation and understanding of the history, development, and advances of surgery and related subjects in health and medicine. Housed in a 1917 mansion designed by Howard Van Doren Shaw as a replica of a building at Versailles, the museum hosts about 20,000 visitors a year, many of whom are visiting field trips or medical students. Some of the artifacts include an Iron Lung, Civil War era medical equipment, amputation kits, Taiwanese medical cards, and a recreational X-Ray machine.
