About us

San Mateo County READS is an adult literacy program that provides free one-on-one tutoring and small group instruction to adults who want to improve their basic reading and writing skills. READS works with anyone who is 16 years or older, is functionally proficient in English, and who is not enrolled in a formal educational setting. Adult learners meet with their trained volunteer tutor 2-3 hours a week in a reliable, safe and caring learning environment. Tutoring services are available in all of our San Mateo County Library communities.*

  • San Mateo County Library communities include: Atherton, Belmont, Brisbane, East Palo Alto, Foster City Library, Half Moon Bay, Millbrae, Pacifica, Portola Valley, San Carlos and Woodside. For all other cities in San Mateo County, please contact your local library to ask about their adult literacy program, or call 1-888-SOS-READ.
