About Us

Founded in 1961, AED is an independent, nonprofit organization committed to solving critical social problems in the U.S. and throughout the world through education, social marketing, research, training, policy analysis and innovative program design and management. Major areas of focus include health, education, youth development, and the environment.

Staff: 1,200; including 400 field staff working overseas

Program Locations: More than 250 programs in 167 countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, and throughout the United States.

Annual Budget: $196 million

Funding: Grants and contracts by foundations, corporations and associations; U.S. federal, state and local governments; universities and private institutions; multilateral agencies and national governments.

Program Areas: AED is comprised of 23 Centers of Excellence, organized into five groups:
