About us

Rural Resources is All About Local Food!

Based in the agricultural heartland of rural Appalachian East Tennessee, we work to connect local farms and food with families.

Rural Resources originated in 1993. It was formed by four family members, Watt and Jennifer Childress and Larry and Karen Childress, who were returning to their Grandfather Dobson's farm to learn about and practice sustainable agriculture. Shortly after they arrived, they saw that farmland in the area was being sold for development at an alarming rate. They formed Rural Resources after deciding that that they wanted to work to preserve farmland. Rural Resources is still located on the Dobson Farm, and values the heritage of its founders.

We have a variety of programs focused on connecting food, farms, and families in Greene County and surrounding regions.

  • Farm Day Camp engages children in the delights of the farm including milking a cow, planting seeds, and exploring the outdoors
  • Four Seasons Grazing Club encourages better forage production and utilization through increased emphasis on grazing management
  • Food Security Task Force gathers together organizations, agencies, churches, farmers, businesses, school systems, and high educaiton institutions that are working to address food insecurity. The task force meets every so often and is open to anyone. Generally the groups meeting grow or work with folks who grow food, provide access and emergency access to food, and address food related health issues.

From the beginning, Rural Resources has had the honor and pleasure of partnering with other organizations and individuals in the community. Partnerships that have continued from the early days of the organization to present include Tusculum College, the Tennessee Department of Agriculture, the East Tennessee Foundation, and the Greeneville Women's Club.
