About us

New Haven Reads (NHR) Community Book Bank aims to spread the joy and power of reading. We provides an environment where children and adults have access to free books and tutoring to increase their literacy skills and academic performance.

NHR provides one-on-one after school tutoring. We currently tutor 525 children a week, but still have almost 250 students on the wait list. We tutor children, K- high school, from 87 schools in Greater New Haven. NHR also provides homework help four times a week, a pre-K and kindergarten program, math, writing and chess clubs once a week, an SAT prep class, and family events. NHR is also a book bank, distributing over 100,000 gently used books to individuals, school teachers, and other organizations, such as homeless shelters, pre-schools, and homes for disabled adults. NHR is part of the citywide education reform effort aimed at reducing the appalling achievement gap and improving the reading levels of students within the local school systems. Our mission is to share the joy and power of reading, one child at a time.
