First Book -New York City is a local advisory of First Book, the national nonprofit organization which has a single mission: to give children from low-income families the opportunity to read and own their first new books. The primary goal of First Book is to work with existing literacy programs to distribute new books to children who, for economic reasons, have little or no access to books. First Book - New York City works to effectively leverage the heroic efforts of local tutoring, mentoring, and family literacy organizations already reaching the children who need help the most. Last year alone First Book - New York City was able to distribute more than 3,000 books to hundreds of children across New York City.
