About Us

WHAT WE DO

With over 40 years of experience, Providence House is a leader in helping people overcome challenges and gain independence in the community. Our unique gender-responsive, trauma-informed approach to providing temporary housing for women who would otherwise be incarcerated, transitional housing for families experiencing homelessness, and permanent supportive housing for a range of clients.

Our professionally-trained staff serves nearly 600 people per year at eight locations in Brooklyn and one site in New Rochelle. We work closely with residents to provide support and develop strategies to help each regain their sense of inherent self-worth and a stability in their lives that permeates their relationships as well as their ability to maintain self-sufficiency.

OUR MISSION

Providence House serves and advocates for women and families at risk of harm, who have histories of homelessness or justice-involvement, and provides a safe community where their dignity is recognized, strengths are enhanced and a transition to stability is achieved.

OUR VISION

At a moment when the challenges of homelessness and criminal justice reform are prominent in New York and nationally, Providence House will adapt and enhance its model of providing comprehensive, community-centered, trauma-informed services to serve more women and children at risk of harm.

VALUES

Whether in conversation over dinner or in helping with a job search, Providence House’s values are behind everything we do. Our key values are:

  • Community: We believe the health of the community rests squarely on the shoulders of every member of that community. It is through the relationships established by our programs that true change can be effected in the lives of the women and children we serve.
  • Non-Violence: We emphasize non-violence as a necessary component of mental health and successful rehabilitation. It is through communication — not violence — that we come to terms with our differences.
  •  Compassion: We have a deep sensitivity to the hardships that many of the women and children in our community have experienced. We teach them the skills that help them deal with life’s complexities and provide them with tools to make their lives better.
  •  Hospitality: We are a welcoming community, open to change and new ideas. Through hospitality, we better ourselves, and the work we do.
