About Us

Mission

The Illinois Science and Energy Innovation Foundation (ISEIF) was created to inform and engage Illinois consumers in the transformation to a digital electric grid. ISEIF accomplishes this through funding innovative education, outreach, and research projects.

Our mission is to empower consumers to understand and adopt energy management technologies and related programs; to create positive changes in consumer behavior related to patterns of energy use; and to increase literacy around issues of energy usage. Since this is a niche funding area and sharing best practices is essential to success, we facilitate collaboration and coordination amongst our grantees.

Background

In 2011, the State of Illinois passed the Energy Infrastructure Modernization Act, legislation that allows the two electric utilities to make a $3.2 billion investment in modernizing the state’s outdated electrical infrastructure, effectively building out a statewide smart grid. As part of this legislation, ComEd and Ameren are required to allocate $5M annually to the Illinois Science and Energy Innovation Foundation (ISEIF) which will support consumer education regarding the smart grid, smart meters, energy management technologies and programs that will benefit Illinois consumers.

ISEIF is a private not-for-profit corporation, founded in 2012 to manage this smart grid consumer education fund. To achieve its mission, ISEIF has administered an approximately $50 million consumer education grant fund ($5 million annually for up to 10 years), which has supported qualified nonprofit organizations in implementing innovative and high-impact smart grid consumer education projects.
