Her Star Scholars sends girls to school. We reach out to girls and young women from impoverished communities around the world who would otherwise not have the chance to receive an education.
Currently we are running a pilot program in several squatter communities in the southern Philippines. We are supporting a nursery school and kindergarten, sponsoring elementary students, providing scholarships for college students and offering summer enrichment programs. Women from the community are given opportunities to attend classes to develop job and parenting skills.
We have also introduced a very small project in Ukraine to provide education and support to young girls who are released from orphanages at the age of 16. We are beginning by supporting and mentoring a "graduated orphan" as she attends beauty school.
In October we are prepared to to send at least 7 children to school in Burkina Faso. These children receive bicycles so they can safely make the long trips to their schools and the families are provided with beans and rice
Future plans in the Philippines include introducing literacy training for parents, after-school programs, mentoring opportunities, and support groups for women and girls who are victims of violence. Additionally we are working towards the purchase of a farm which will both help the primary and kinder schools become financially self-sufficient and also offer opportunities for environmental education programs. We also hope to expand our programs in Burkina Faso, Ukraine, and add a small project in Guatemala. Her Star Scholars is operated exclusively by volunteers. Donated money goes directly to support the international programs.
