About Us

Common Cents, creator of the Penny Harvest, is an educational institution that designs innovative school-based programs to foster student leadership, enabling them to strengthen their schools and communities through philanthropy and service-learning.

The Penny Harvest program grew from one child's desire to feed the homeless. Now in its 23rd year, the Penny Harvest continues to empower children from preschool to high school-in every life circumstance-to become socially engaged philanthropists. Students have collected $10.5 million in pennies, awarded 25,000 grants and volunteered over 47 million service hours to support causes for children, the environment health care, human rights, the elderly and disaster relief.

Children collect. Children decide.

The Penny Harvest engages principals, parents, and community leaders by empowering children to lead the way in transforming idle coins into meaningful grants and service projects to better our communities.
