About Us

Equal Access to Justice is a 501c3 nonprofit organization that started in 1988 by concerned attorneys who saw firsthand how many New Mexicans with civil legal problems could not get legal help.

Rule 16-601 of The Rules of Professional Conduct inspires New Mexico licensed attorneys to give donations or pro-bono time to the indigent population of our state. If you can’t donate pro-bono time, Equal Access to Justice is a great place to make a financial contribution to legal services.

When you donate to Equal Access to Justice, you are donating to four legal services providers in New Mexico – New Mexico Legal Aid, DNA – People’s Legal Services, Law Access New Mexico and the New Mexico Center on Law and Poverty. These providers cover the largest area in New Mexico and also cover the largest variety of services for legal help in the state, ensuring you that your donation to EAJ goes the furthest for New Mexicans in need.

The types of cases our providers work with include housing and shelter rights, domestic relations, consumer issues, government benefits, health care, Indian tribal issues, and protection of land and water rights.

Our providers’ clients include low-income families, adults and children with disabilities, elderly people and homeless people.
